National Police Week Virtual Candle, the idea of American Charities and its member to honor the Law Enforcement. The fallen will not be forgotten
National Police Week Virtual Candle, the idea of Charities and its members to honor the brave men and women of Law Enforcement. On average, one law enforcement officer is killed in the line of duty somewhere in the United States every 54 hours. Since the first known line-of-duty death in 1786, more than 22,000 U.S. law enforcement officers have made the ultimate sacrifice. This year is different than the others due to the ongoing health emergency, America’s Charities and its member, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, recognize that officers on the front lines are increasingly vulnerable to the coronavirus.
National Police Week Virtual Candle
This year the annual tribute to law enforcement service has been online. The idea was of The Memorial Fund, the principal organizer of National Police Week. Nothing stopped The Memorial Fund from making sure that fallen officers will not be forgotten. As the future becomes more certain and the end of this crisis is near, the Memorial Fund will begin to make plans for a live reading of names to honor the 307 officers whose names were newly engraved on the memorial this year. The Memorial Fund is committed: the fallen will not be forgotten.
Light a Virtual Candle, the initiative
On Wednesday 13 May 2020, the annual candlelight vigil took place online. They had set a goal to light a virtual candle for each of the 22,217 officers whose names are engraved on the walls of the Memorial. The initiative was called ‘Light a Virtual Candle’ and participating was simple. You had to follow four steps:
1. Make an online donation choosing the gift amount that is appropriate and meaningful for you;
2. Click on the link received to the Virtual Candle Tribute Form;
3. Dedicate a message of hope and healing and light a virtual candle for your hero or law enforcement agency;
4. Visit LawMemorial.org/VirtualCandle to view all the virtual candle tributes and share them with family and friends.
